MGB Roadster Restoration – Structural Repair & Bare Metal Refinish

Disassembly, Bare Metal Stripping & Restoration Assessment

Every MGB Roadster restoration at Concours Classics begins with a comprehensive disassembly and inspection process. The vehicle is carefully stripped down, with every component removed, documented, labelled and securely stored to ensure accurate reassembly throughout the restoration.

As part of our bare metal restoration process, the body shell is stripped back to bare metal, removing paint, fillers and previous repairs to expose the true condition of the vehicle. This critical stage allows our team of classic car restoration specialists to identify hidden corrosion, accident damage and structural issues that are often impossible to detect during an initial assessment.

Once the shell has been fully inspected, we undertake a detailed review of the findings and reassess the scope of the MGB restoration project where necessary. Any additional work required is clearly documented and discussed with the client before proceeding. Our commitment to transparent communication ensures every restoration is completed with complete clarity, accuracy and client approval at every stage.

This thorough assessment provides the foundation for a high-quality, long-lasting MGB Roadster restoration, ensuring all body and structural repairs are identified before the restoration progresses.

Body Preparation, Corrosion Protection & Panel Finishing

Before any bodywork begins, an important part of our MGB Roadster restoration process is ensuring that newly repaired and fabricated areas are fully protected against future corrosion. As experienced classic car restoration specialists, we believe rust prevention is just as important as the visible finish.

To safeguard the extensive welding and fabrication work completed during the previous stage, we apply high-quality epoxy primer to vulnerable and inaccessible areas before body finishing commences. This includes the inside of the inner rear quarters, sill end overlaps and the reverse side of the rear quarter panels. Treating these hidden sections at this stage creates a durable protective barrier, helping to prevent moisture ingress and future corrosion while preserving the integrity of the restoration for years to come.

Once all internal protection measures have been completed, the vehicle moves into the classic car bodywork phase. Every panel is carefully refined and finished to achieve the correct contours, body lines and panel transitions expected of a high-quality MGB restoration. Using traditional body finishing techniques, filler work is carried out only where necessary to create a smooth, consistent surface while maintaining the original character of the vehicle.

This meticulous preparation stage provides the foundation for exceptional classic car paintwork, ensuring the body shell is both fully protected and accurately prepared before entering the final paint preparation and refinishing process.

Welding, Panel Replacement & Fabrication

Following the initial assessment, the next stage of this MGB Roadster restoration focuses on structural repairs, classic car welding and precision panel replacement. With all corrosion and damaged sections identified, the body shell undergoes extensive restoration work to return its strength, integrity and original factory appearance.

For this particular MGB restoration project, new inner and outer sills, sill-to-floor repair sections, front wings, rear quarter panels and a new bonnet were required. In addition to these replacement panels, several repair sections were hand fabricated in-house by our skilled craftsmen to accurately replicate original MG specifications where replacement parts were unavailable or unsuitable.

Every panel is carefully trial fitted and adjusted to achieve correct alignment, panel gaps and body lines before any permanent installation takes place. All mating surfaces and concealed areas are thoroughly treated and protected to help prevent future corrosion before the panels are expertly welded into position.

As experienced MG restoration specialists, we understand that the quality of the welding and fabrication work forms the foundation of a successful classic car restoration. By combining high-quality replacement panels with traditional fabrication techniques, we ensure every MGB body restoration is completed to the highest standards of craftsmanship, durability and authenticity.

This stage transforms the vehicle from a corroded body shell into a structurally sound platform, ready for the next phase of body preparation and paintwork.
